Now Urthro's peoples-human and non-human alike live in a terraced city carved into the face of a gleaming white cliff on the edge of the Western Ocean. It has been ten years since the magical Cataclysm, which destroyed the twin strongholds of the two world's most powerful Mages, killing Urtho, creator of the gryphons, and sending his forces into exile. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Spanish sun glanced brightly off the fountains and turned the flowers into neon. On the rim of a reflecting pond, a pair of lovers did what lovers do, oblivious of the throngs of sightseers. The bride, a slightly-past-sell-date dark haired lady stuffed into her white gown, led the mustachioed groom toward a fountain for wedding pictures. In one courtyard, we came across a wedding party. We lined up at the appointed time for the daytime tour and wandered on cobblestone streets to graceful stone archways, past flower-bordered paths and into the endless intricacy of Moorish rooms covered in jewel-toned tiles. Thanks to Irving’s Tales of the Alhambra, when we went to a bank that sells tickets to the Alhambra, Ken and I bought tickets for both the daytime tour and the evening tour. “…clothing naked realities with the illusions of the memory and the imagination,” as he puts it. In his book, Tales of the Alhambra, which describes time that he spent in the wonderful building that dominates Granada Spain, he weaves stories that take place in daylight shadows and others that slink through the dark. Washington Irving knew the evocative power of moonlight. The light peoples the walls of the Alhambra with romantic ghosts. Moonlight illuminates tile walls and stone lions that are more than 600 years old. ![]() Book: Tales of the Alhambra by Washington Irving Reflecting pool in the Alhambra ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It made absolute sense to me that Raff is resistant to a relationship with Penryn for much of the book. There are plenty of instances where the typical YA HEA just doesn't make sense and End of Days is certainly an example of this. End of Days ended abruptly after a large battle scene and Ee swiftly brought about the HEA as though there was always one way for this book to end - Penryn and Raffe becoming a couple. I wanted End of Days to be absolutely epic, particularly given that World After ( book 2 in the series) felt like a placeholder. ![]() I really went into End of Days hopeful but alas it seems that my hope is sadly misplaced. Penryn has fallen deeply for Raffe but after seeing that he hasn't always been faithful to his friends, Penryn must decide if she can trust him not with her heart but with the fate of all humanity. Pookie Bear the ancient sword is determined to through it's own issues into the mix by delving into Raffe's past. ![]() For his part, Raffe knows he is forbidden from the daughter of man and with an impending fake apocalypse in the works by Uriel. As an archangel Raffe is a member of the invading army, yet Penryn is drawn to him. Penryn, Raffe and Paige are on the run after an epic showdown with angels. ![]() ![]() ![]() With such misery confronting them at every turn, the two turn to each other. Indeed, whenever Henry and Catherine are blissful, something comes along to interrupt it - be it Henry's injury, his being sent back to the front, his impending arrest, or, finally, Catherine's death from childbirth. Henry frequently reflects upon the world's insistence on breaking and killing everyone it is as if the world cannot bear to let anyone remain happy and safe. Rather, he indicts the world at large for its atmosphere of destruction. ![]() From the opening account of cholera that kills "only" 7,000 men to the graphic description of the artillery bombardment to the corrupt violence during the Italian retreat, A Farewell to Arms is among the most frank anti-war novels.īut Hemingway does not merely condemn war. Somehow, I did not manage to get an ARC of DREAMING ANASTASIA at BEA (unlike Amy and Kathy - I guess that will teach me not to "ditch" them.) So when I found out that Sourcebooks was looking for bloggers to participate in a book tour, I jumped at the chance. When I first "discovered" DREAMING ANASTASIA by Joy Preble, I thought it sounded like a great premise for a book - Anne, a young girl in Chicago starts having vivid dreams about what happened to Anastasia Romanov after she survived the brutal murder of her entire family. But, Anastasia is having her own dreams… - Sourcebooks Jabberwocky She is the only one who can save Anastasia. The vivid dreams startle her, but not until a handsome stranger offers to explain them does she realize her life is going to change forever. And she is sharing a small room with a very old woman. She is more concerned about getting into a good college-until the dreams start. In modern-day Chicago, Anne doesn't know much about Russian history. When she wakes up she discovers that she is in the ancient hut of the witch Baba Yaga, and that some things are worse than being dead. Instead, two gnarled old hands reached for her. ![]() Surely the bullets would come for her next. ![]() ![]() Summary: What really happened to Anastasia Romanov?Īnastasia Romanov thought she would never feel more alone than when the gunfire started and her family began to fall around her. ![]() ![]() Diaz uses her memoir to shine light on communities that deserve our attention. ![]() It's about her mom, her dad, her grandmothers it's about her her neighbors, her community, and Puerto Rico and it's about all other ordinary girls. Marriage and motherhood have only served to strengthen her convictions about sexuality, faith and tolerance and those stories and beliefs are writ large across new EP ‘Confessions of a Good Southern Lady’. Raised by her grandparents in rural Alabama, Grae had to deal with the harsh realities of parental failure throughout her early life and has channeled these experiences into her work on ‘The Glee Project’ and on into projects like her debut album, ‘Break These Crowns’ in 2017.
